Specific Connections
Connecting to what we've learned this year
China's Opium War
We can relate China's Opium War to the Mexican drug cartel because of the enormous effect drugs can have on an entire nation. As much as a government may try to step in and stop them, drugs have proven to be a very difficult force to deal with. They can change the state of a country and it's economy very rapidly. Drugs monopolize every aspect of a country from sparking war to government corruption and poverty.
Government Corruption
Governments we've studied this year have become corrupt when certain individuals go against the rules they put in place. These groups want the government on their side because of the powerful influence they can have for their cause. As we have seen several times, this kind of tactic is what leads to government corruption. Mexican Drug Cartels have done this same thing, as they attempted to get the government on their side to continue to obtain the revenue they receive from drug trafficking.
Palestine and Israel
Palestine and Israel relate to the Mexican Drug Cartels because Palestinians and Israeli's have fought over land for years just like cartels fight against each other for routes and territory. Palestine and Israel believe they have the right to certain land similar to how the many different cartels believe that they own certain areas. The conflict between these groups have both led to violence and death. It has also led to a more divided country.
Belgium and Germany WWII (same as how colombia got to the us and involved mexico)
In World War II, Belgium stood in between Germany and it's target, France. To get to France, the german army decided to march through Belgium, taking it over on the way. Similarly, the Colombians used Mexico as a crossroad to get their drugs to the United States. This created an incredibly unstable nation and pushed Mexico to the violent state it is in today.
